01/ Overview

The route

This historical trail sets off from Vicosoprano, the largest village in the Val Bregaglia, and finishes in Chiavenna in Italy. Along the way, you will encounter villages with real local character, dry stone walls and ruins, gorgeous chestnut forests and an impressive waterfall.

From the Vicosoprano, Helvetia bus stop, the mountain trail leads through the village and soon reaches its highest point at around 1,070 m. The route then descends through Bergell. Open meadows, stretches of woodland and small settlements alternate along the way. In Coltura, the trail passes directly by Palazzo Castelmur, a monument to the culture of Graubünden emigrants who returned home.

The route continues via Promontogno to Bondo. Here, the Romanesque church of San Martino stands directly beside the trail; Italian frescoes from the late 15th century have been preserved inside. Beyond the village, the trail once again becomes narrower and more mountainous in places before reaching Castasegna on the Italian border.

The second half runs mostly along easier hiking trails and steadily loses altitude. Woodland and open slopes accompany the long descent to Chiavenna, which is reached after just over six hours. The destination lies away from the stated public transport connection; the nearest stop, Castasegna, Vecchia Dogana, is just over 8 km away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
