01/ Overview
The route
With the French in pursuit, Suvorov's troops marched southwards in snowfall towards Elm. The easy hike leads to Schwanden alongside the river Linth and then partly above, partly along, the river Sernf via Engi and Matt to Elm.
From Glarus railway station, the route initially leads through the built-up area to Ennenda. The waymarked hiking trail then enters the Aueliwald. After around three kilometres, the Auelichopf barbecue site offers a first opportunity for a break. The route gains around 660 metres in elevation overall.
Beyond the forest, the landscape is dominated by open meadows and pastures. The long middle section climbs mainly uphill past small settlements, with short stretches of woodland repeatedly breaking up the open terrain. This keeps the hike varied without making it technically demanding. At Boligen, another barbecue site lies directly beside the trail, and Matt is reached shortly afterwards.
Towards the end, the route continues to climb via Sulzbach and Schwändi. Shortly before Elm, it reaches its highest point at around 965 m, before the final stretch leads to Elm station. Just over five and a half hours should be allowed for the 21 kilometres.

Schwanden: Sernftalstrasse
From 24 Aug 2026 – Until 25 Jun 2027
Sanierungsarbeiten an der Sernftalstrasse. Im Rahmen der Sanierung wird die schadhafte Stützmauer ersetzt und die bestehenden Werkleitungen erneuert. Weiter umfasst das Projekt die Erstellung einer Kernfahrbahn sowie die Erneuerung des bestehenden Gehwegs. Die Bauarbeiten werden über die Wintermonate unterbrochen und im Frühjahr 2027 wieder aufgenommen. Der Abschluss der Arbeiten ist voraussichtlich im Juni 2027 vorgesehen.
