01/ Overview
The route
From Grünenmatt station, across open Emmental slopes to Trachselwald Castle and onwards through meadows and woodland to Heimisbach.
The walk of just under two hours begins at Grünenmatt station with a gentle ascent out of the village. At first, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads across open slopes towards Trachselwald. The initial metres of ascent remain moderate. Here, Trachselwald Castle comes close to the route: dating from the 13th century, this monument of national importance recalls the history of the upper Emmental and the Peasants’ War.
Beyond Trachselwald, the route leaves the marked hiking network and continues uphill across meadows. Patches of woodland interrupt the open terrain as the walk reaches its highest point at just over 840 m. It then continues with gentle ups and downs through the slopes above Heimisbach. After around five and a half kilometres, the nearly 280 metres of ascent end in Heimisbach; the Heimisbach, Thal stop is around 200 m from the destination.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
