01/ Overview
The route
High-level hike over the Hohwacht-Girsgrat chain of hills. Past a historic signal post, one of Switzerland’s oldest tunnels and a dairy producing guaranteed authentic Emmental cheese. Typical Emmental patchwork of hills, gullies, meadows and woodlands.
The hike begins right by the Langnau i.E. public transport stop and soon leaves the village behind. The waymarked hiking trail climbs through the gentle hills. Open meadows and pastures alternate with shady stretches of woodland, while isolated farms and small settlements provide the characteristic rhythm of this landscape.
After the first extended climb, the route continues in a steady succession of ascents and descents to Hüpfenhüttli and onwards to Vorder Girsgrat. The trail then climbs once more. Near Howürzhoger, the hike reaches its highest point at around 1,100 m. By here, a large part of the total ascent of around 580 metres has been completed.
The final section descends via Aebnit towards Eggiwil. Woodland and pasture accompany the descent before houses once again line the route. After around twelve kilometres and a good three and a half hours, the hike ends at the Eggiwil, Dorf stop.
