01/ Overview
The route
Ridge walk on the west flank of the Pfyffer. Breathtaking views from the Wachthubel of Schrattenflue and Hohgant, foothill bastions of the Alps. Black buffalos are seen on the decent - the reason Schangnau is famous for its mozzarella.
The hike begins in the heart of the village at the Eggiwil, Dorf bus stop. The yellow-marked trail soon leaves the houses behind and climbs into the hills of the upper Emmental. Open meadows and pastures dominate the landscape, interspersed with longer stretches of forest. The total ascent is around 800 metres, so climbing accounts for a good part of the roughly four-and-a-half-hour hike.
The route then continues over the heights in a steady succession of ascents and descents. After Ober Bergegg, the trail steepens once more and reaches the Wachthubel, the main summit of the Obere Fluh. At around 1,400 m, this is the highest point of the hike. This is where Eggiwil, Schangnau and Escholzmatt-Marbach meet.
From the Wachthubel, the trail descends towards the valley, once again alternating between forest and open pasture. The descent ends in the village of Schangnau. The Gasthof zum Löwen and the Schangnau, Post bus stop are located right by the finish.
