Walserweg, Stage 12/19

The long hike begins at 2,252 metres of elevation, descending through Val Spadlatscha to Filisur. Running past typical Engadine houses, the spectacular hiking trail passes through scree and avalanche paths that extend from the Muchetta massif down to the Landwasser river. You can enjoy a stunning view of the Wiesen Viaduct, the largest brick-built bridge on the Rhaetian Railway.

The route begins at Chamonas d’Ela CAS at around 2,250 m, also its highest point. The hut stands in the upper Val Spadlatscha, in the heart of Parc Ela, and belongs to the Davos Section of the Swiss Alpine Club. The starting point is some distance from public transport; the nearest stop, Bergün/Bravuogn, posta, is around 4 km away.

From the very first step, the white-red-white waymarked mountain hiking trail leads downhill. The long descent to Filisur crosses open alpine pastures near Prosot and later passes through forest. The route reaches its lowest point there. After this, the character of the hike changes: instead of continuing to lose elevation, the trail climbs steeply again, alternating between wooded slopes and open meadows.

After Jenisberg, a small settlement above the Landwasser valley, the route continues through the forest and eventually reaches Monstein. After around 22 km and just over seven hours, the long and physically demanding traverse comes to an end. The Davos Monstein, Dorf stop is around 400 m from the finishing point.
