Weissenstein-Passwang-Weg, Stage 2/2

A mountain hike with stunning views over the second and third chain of the Jura mountains. This ruggedly romantic trail through the Wolfsschlucht (Wolf Gorge) will get you in the mood for exploration and adventure. There are numerous mountain restaurant where you can stop for a break along the way.

From the Welschenrohr, Zentrum bus stop, the yellow-waymarked hiking trail leads through the village and past the Theodul Church. Before long, sections of woodland alternate with open meadows and pastures. The long ascent defines the first part of the hike: near Schwang, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,200 m. The terrain then becomes gentler, and the trail continues through the Solothurn Jura in a steady succession of climbs and descents.

Around halfway, the route crosses the Scheltenpass. This 15-kilometre mountain pass links Mervelier with Ramiswil and also crosses into the canton of Bern. Shortly afterwards, the Bergrestaurant Erzberg lies beside the trail. The route continues over wooded Jura heights and across open stretches to Chratteneggli. Towards the end, the trail approaches Passwang, a well-known viewpoint on the mountain ridge, and crosses Passwanghöhe. After around 18 kilometres and just over five and a half hours, the hike ends at the Ramiswil, Alpenblick bus stop. With around 950 metres of ascent, the route is a demanding full-day hike despite the easy trails.
