Wolfsschlucht-Weg

This loop trail shows the different sides of the Thal Nature Park. It begins with a climb through the lovely Wolf Gorge and continues along the lofty heights of the second chain of the Jura mountains.

The approximately 13-kilometre circular hike begins at the Welschenrohr, Zentrum bus stop. Just over four and a half hours should be allowed for the route, which involves around 860 metres of ascent. Initially, the trail follows the Dünnern, accompanying the stream through the valley for around three kilometres. The main ascent then begins, following yellow-marked hiking trails uphill between meadows, pastures and woodland.

After just over two hours, the route passes the Obere Tannmatt mountain restaurant. It then reaches its highest point at just under 1,180 metres; the summit of Tannmattchopf itself lies off the trail. Most of the ascent is now complete, and the hiking trail turns back down towards the valley.

On the descent, open slopes alternate with longer stretches of woodland. The Hinter Brandberg mountain restaurant lies directly on the route before the trail continues towards Welschenrohr. Near the end, the first houses come into view. Passing the Church of St Theodul, it is only a few more steps to the village centre and back to the bus stop.
