01/ Overview

The route

A short winter hike across the open slopes of Niederbauen, with views of the lake and the Alps accompanying the gentle ascent to Hunds-Chopf and the return to the mountain station.

The Emmetten–Niederbauen cable car takes winter hikers directly to Niederbauen mountain station, where the approximately four-kilometre route begins. Emmetten can be reached from Stans by PostBus. The mountain inn is also located at Niederbauen. From here, the groomed winter hiking trail crosses open terrain towards Ebnet and Hunds-Chopf. With every gentle metre of ascent, the panorama across the lake and towards the Alps broadens.

After just under two kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,660 m. Shortly afterwards, Hunds-Chopf marks the turning point. Open slopes characterise almost the entire hike, allowing uninterrupted views. The same trail then leads back via Ebnet. With no long counter-ascents, it takes just over an hour to return to Niederbauen mountain station, where the cable car descends to Emmetten.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
