01/ Overview
The route
Short cable car ride, big winter hiking experience: This sunny circular tour on the Eggberge above Altdorf offers fantastic panoramic views, pleasant spots to stop and have refreshments and beautifully snow-covered spruce forests. The entire path is groomed and is particularly suitable for families with children.
From the Eggberge station, the winter hike initially leads away from the houses and onto open slopes. The ascent begins early and climbs steadily uphill. Between broad meadows and short sections of forest, the route gains a total of around 440 metres in elevation. Higher up, the forest becomes more extensive.
A little over halfway along, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,860 m, not far from Höch Egg. The summit itself, however, lies off the route. Shortly afterwards, the trail leads to the Hüenderegg viewpoint, which is almost directly on the circuit. The longer return leg then begins: initially through forest, then later downhill across open terrain once again.
Towards the end, the houses of Eggberge reappear. After around seven kilometres and just under three hours, the winter hike finishes back at the Eggberge station.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
