01/ Overview

The route

A short winter circuit from Rossweid through woodland and extensive moorland to Schwarzenegg. At the highest point, the terrain opens out before the trail leads back to the gondola lift.

This roughly one-hour winter hike starts at the top station of the Rossweid gondola lift, right by Berggasthaus Rossweid. The gondola runs up from Sörenberg. The circuit initially descends through woodland to the moorland. Between wet meadows and sparse woodland, the moorland landscape of national importance reveals itself, giving this short route its distinctive character.

The trail then turns uphill and climbs towards Schwarzenegg. The highest point, at just over 1,520 m, is reached near Schwarzenegg. The Schwarzenegg ski hut has a sun terrace and a cosy dining room; it marks the upper section of the circuit.

On the return leg, open terrain and woodland once again alternate. If wildlife is spotted, a sufficient distance should be maintained; dogs must be kept on a lead. After the gentle descent, a short counter-climb leads back to Rossweid. The circuit ends once again at the top station, right by the Rossweid stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
