01/ Overview

The route

A hike along the banks of the wild Rom, the main valley river in the Val Müstair. From its source to Müstair, the path meanders through a lovely river landscape with floodplains, gravel banks and flowering meadows. Information boards and a brochure offer insights into the eventful history, special habitats or legends associated with the Rom.

At the Süsom Tschierv bus stop, the hike begins at its highest point, at around 1,740 m. The mountain trail descends to Tschierv and passes through the houses of Orasom Tschierv. Open meadows and pastures soon alternate with longer stretches of forest, while short ascents punctuate the otherwise steady descent.

Over the next few kilometres, the route continues along the wooded valley slope. At Muglin, it reaches the more open countryside around Valchava. From here, another long stretch leads through forest, partly on a mountain trail, before the yellow-marked hiking trail continues towards Müstair. Three and a half hours should be allowed for the roughly 14 km to the monastery.

Shortly before the destination, the Plazzöl barbecue site lies close to the route. The final metres then lead to the houses of Müstair and the monastery. The Müstair, Clostra Son Jon bus stop is just under 200 m from the endpoint.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
