01/ Overview

The route

This tour begins and ends at the Ofen Pass road, enters the National Park and leads to the peak area of Munt la Schera, which has been flattened by the glacier. The views range far across the reservoir, Livigno valley and the Bernina group. Alpine pastures, forests of stone pine and scree gullies are a frequent sight on this tour.

The roughly 15-kilometre mountain hike between the Engadin and Münstertal begins at the Süsom Givè (Passhöhe) bus stop. The white-red-white marked trail soon leaves the pass behind and climbs across open meadows and pastures. Sections of forest and increasingly rocky terrain give the route a rugged, high-alpine character.

After just over three hours, the route reaches its highest point near Munt la Schera at around 2,580 m. The summit itself lies away from the trail. The main ascent is now complete, and the long descent begins.

The trail descends over rocky slopes and through mountain forest towards the Ofenpass road. Near the end, it loses considerable elevation once again before reaching Il Fuorn after around five hours. The Il Fuorn P6 bus stop is located immediately beside the destination. With around 800 metres of ascent and 1,100 metres of descent, the hike requires stamina as well as sure-footedness on the mountain trail throughout.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
