01/ Overview
The route
A peaceful snowshoe hike through the snow-covered pine forest up to Alp Natons where magnificent views of Lake Marmorera and the surrounding mountains open up. Take the same route back to Bivio.
The snowshoe tour starts on the edge of the village at the Bivio, posta bus stop. Shortly after setting off, the route follows the Gelgia before leaving the valley floor behind. Bivio soon recedes into the distance as the trail climbs steadily through the forest. The first open slopes appear between the trees. The six-kilometre circuit involves around 300 metres of ascent and takes just under three hours.
Beyond the forest, the terrain opens out. The ascent continues to the highest point of the circuit at around 1,960 m, near Motta da Starschagns. This marks roughly the halfway point. The route then descends in a wide arc back into the valley. Sections of forest alternate with open ground before the first houses of Bivio come into view. The snowshoe trail ends back at the Bivio, posta bus stop.
