Alpine Passes Trail, Stage 4/43

It seems as if the trail through Val Nandro and Val Schmorras never wants to end. On reaching Schmorras Pass, the mountain backdrop is impressive but the terrain is difficult. The path to Alp Mos is lined with splendid blossoms and attractive piles of stones. Ausserferrera has made its name as a bouldering paradise.

The long mountain hike begins at the Savognin, scola/Skischule bus stop. From the village, the trail soon climbs across open meadows and alpine pastures. Almost the entire route follows a mountain path that ascends steadily to Radons. A little further on, the Muntanela mountain inn stands directly beside the route.

The terrain then becomes more barren, and the climb continues to Pass da Schmorras. At around 2,570 m, the route reaches its highest point near Piz Settember. The summit itself lies away from the trail; from the west, the mountain appears as a steep limestone crag.

Beyond the pass, a long descent leads into the Ferrera valley. Open slopes gradually give way to forest as the mountain path loses almost 1,400 metres in elevation. After around seven and a half hours and 22 kilometres, the route ends by the houses of Ausserferrera. The Ferrera, Ausserferrera bus stop is around 200 m from the finish.
