01/ Overview
The route
The second leg takes you to one of the highlights of the entire route: the imposing Landwasser Viaduct. But first you will walk along the burbling river Albula, past the central point of the canton of the Grisons and onward to one of the photo opportunities for taking a souvenir picture of the world-famous Rhaetian Railways viaduct.
From the Tiefencastel, staziun stop, the hike leads out of the village, initially descending gently. The mountain trail soon takes over, passing through extensive woodland interspersed with open meadows and pastures. After the first longer section, the route reaches Surava and continues towards Alvaneu Bad. This part is characterised more by constant ups and downs than by any individual steep climbs.
Beyond Alvaneu Bad, the surroundings become more wooded again. Towards the end, the trail follows the Schmittenerbach for a short stretch before the final ascent begins. Shortly before Filisur, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,080 m; from there, the destination is soon reached. The trail passes s'Bahnhöfli and ends near the Filisur, Schöntal stop. A little over three hours should be allowed for the twelve kilometres and approximately 420 metres of ascent.
