01/ Overview
The route
The Andermatt snowshoe trail runs via Mettlen to the snow-covered Unteralp. The crowning glory of this circular tour: the view from the Mariahilf Chapel over the village of Andermatt at the foot of the Oberalp Pass.
From the Andermatt, Brücke stop, it is only a few steps to the starting point at Fliesgaden. The snowshoe trail quickly leaves the houses behind and climbs across open terrain. The short, three-kilometre circuit involves around 190 metres of ascent. Roughly halfway along, the route reaches its highest point at just under 1,600 m.
The trail then turns downhill. Passing between open ground and forest, it loses elevation again and approaches Andermatt from a different direction. Shortly before reaching the built-up area, the route passes the Mariahilf Chapel, which was built in 1735/1736 as a pilgrimage chapel. Beyond the chapel, the descent continues towards the houses.
Towards the end, the circuit once again passes through the outskirts of Andermatt. Fliesgaden is reached after a little over an hour and a half; from there, it is again only around 80 m to the Andermatt, Brücke stop.
