01/ Overview
The route
Following the footsteps of the muleteers, this short and technically simple circular trail affords a variety of views into the Ursern Valley. Start and finish at Hospental with its striking Tower of the Lords.
The approximately four-kilometre snowshoe circuit begins right by the Hospental stop. Beyond the first houses, the route follows the Furkareuss for a while before climbing into open terrain above the village. The highest point is reached after just the first third: at around 1,520 m, near the Spitzberg, the ascent eases off. The total elevation gain is around 150 metres.
The route then sweeps in a broad arc across the open slopes and descends back towards the valley. The tower of Hospental Castle stands a little way off the route and remains a striking landmark above the village. In the final third, the circuit reaches the valley floor and follows the Reuss for a short stretch. The route then passes between the first houses on the way back to Hospental; after a little over an hour and a half, the snowshoe tour ends back at the stop.
