01/ Overview

The route

Easy winter loop hike with beautiful views of the mountains surrounding Ilanz. The trail leads across some meadows and along the Anterior Rhine through peaceful forests and nature reserves. Starting in Ilanz you can explore the first part of the Rhine Gorge, the riverside landscape and other cultural highlights.

From the Ilanz, Via Schlifras bus stop, a short walk leads to the starting point at Ilanz/Glion, Bogn. The winter hiking trail soon follows the Glogn before climbing across open meadows to the houses of Sevgein. Above the village, the highest point is reached after around three kilometres, at approximately 830 metres.

The route then descends through the forest back into the valley. Open areas alternate with wooded slopes, while the Glogn remains close by for much of the way. In Castrisch, the trail passes directly by the listed Reformed church before continuing through the village.

The return route once again follows the river towards Ilanz. Shortly before the finish, it passes the Landgasthof zum Glenner. After around three and a half hours, the circuit ends back at Ilanz/Glion, Bogn, near the Ilanz, Via Schlifras bus stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
