01/ Overview
The route
There is an easy snowshoe-hike through the virgin snow of the Cavaglia alpine plateau that is only accessible by rail in winter. Ideal for a family outing, it traces the paths trod by hardy railway pioneers and the builders of the first electrical utilities.
The four-kilometre snowshoe tour begins at the Cavaglia stop. Stazione Cavaglia is also located directly on the route. Beyond the handful of houses, the circuit enters the forest and climbs gently at first, then somewhat more steeply. With a total ascent of around 100 metres, the profile remains moderate. The first clearings open up between the trees before the highest point, at around 1,760 metres, is reached after roughly a third of the route.
The circuit then gradually loses altitude. Sections of forest alternate with open terrain as the route traces a broad arc through the surroundings of Cavaglia. Towards the end, the houses draw closer again. Shortly before the starting point, the snowshoe tour passes Buffet Diego and returns to the Cavaglia stop after around an hour and a half.
