01/ Overview
The route
A steady ascent through the Choltal: gravel roads, alpine pastures and woodland lead via Hohberg to the Niederbauen mountain station, just over 800 metres above the starting point.
From the valley station of the Niederbauen cable car, a few steps from the Emmetten (Niederbauenbahn) stop, the route leads into the Choltal. It climbs steadily along extended stretches of gravel road via Kohlrüti to the Chohltalbach. At Stärten, the last houses are left behind; open meadows and pastures now alternate with sections of woodland.
At Hohberg, a short section on the mountain hiking trail climbs more steeply before reaching Schönenbüel and Alp Unterst-Hütte. There are two ascent options to choose from here. The climb then continues via Alp-Frutt and Steckenbodenmatt, mostly on a broad hiking trail through open terrain.
Towards the end, the route passes the Höllloch and reaches its highest point near Faulberg at around 1,580 m. Shortly afterwards, the ascent of a good two and a half hours ends at the Niederbauen mountain station, from where the cable car descends to Emmetten.
