01/ Overview
The route
Three Alpine cheese dairies, open pastures and short sections of mountain trail characterise this easy circuit from Niederbauen. Along the way, the Cheese Trail climbs to around 1,600 m.
From Hotel Niederbauen, right by the cable car mountain station, the Cheese Trail crosses open Alpine pastures. This short circuit links three places where cheese is made: the Frutt Alpine cheese dairy, Alp Unterst-Hütte and the dairy at Alp Tritt. Between them, the route mainly follows narrower mountain trails, interspersed with easier sections of hiking trail.
Initially, the trail descends around 120 metres without leaving the pasture landscape. It then climbs again. Towards the end, the route reaches its highest point near Gütsch at around 1,600 m. The open terrain remains the defining feature throughout; there are no wooded sections or lengthy valley paths. From there, the circuit leads back to Hotel Niederbauen and the Niederbauen mountain station. Around an hour and a half is sufficient for the nearly four-kilometre route with approximately 170 metres of ascent.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
