01/ Overview
The route
Discover the courtship rituals of black cocks, and with some luck and a sharp eye, observe mountain wildlife on the steep slopes. Equipped with binoculars and a backpack, you'll follow a ranger who knows exactly where the wild things are in the Niederbauen region.
The hike begins high above Emmetten at the Niederbauen stop. The trail initially climbs across open meadows and pastures. After just over two kilometres, the route reaches its highest point near Fulberg at around 1,760 m. The early ascent sets the tone for the opening section; it is followed by a longer stretch on a mountain trail marked white-red-white. The open slopes gradually give way to sections of woodland.
The remainder of the route is predominantly downhill. The path crosses pastureland, enters the forest and, towards the end, becomes a yellow-marked hiking trail again. Between the longer descents, short counter-ascents bring the total elevation gain to around 600 metres; by the finish, the cumulative descent amounts to just over 850 metres. After eleven kilometres, the hike ends at Stockhütte. Stockhütte mountain station is only a few steps away. Just under four hours should be allowed for the entire route.
