01/ Overview

The route

Shady woodland paths, a historic sunken lane and the Hochfluh viewpoint characterise this hike from Emmetten to Seelisberg. Beyond Lake Lucerne, the two Mythen rise on the horizon.

From the Emmetten-Sagendorf bus stop, the path initially leads to the Heiligkreuz Chapel and soon enters the Brennwald. Beneath a dense canopy of leaves, it climbs mostly at a steady gradient; a rest area at the edge of the forest breaks up the shady opening section. At Farenblätz, the route continues through woodland and across open pastures.

Before Litenfad, it follows a historic sunken lane. The mountain trail then climbs more steeply to the highest point near Brandegg at just under 1,100 m. A little further on, Hochfluh lies almost directly on the route. From the viewpoint, the panorama extends across Seelisberg and Lake Lucerne to the two Mythen.

The descent leads out of the forest and down into the village. Close to the route stands the Maria Sonnenberg pilgrimage chapel, whose origins date back to the 17th century. To round off the hike, a visit to the Aschwanden mountain cheese dairy is an option before reaching the station of the Treib–Seelisberg funicular; the Seelisberg, Hotel Sonnenberg bus stop is only a few steps away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
