01/ Overview
The route
A short out-and-back hike across open meadows to the rocky Hunds-Chopf, accompanied by views of the Urnersee and the mountains of eastern Uri.
From the Niederbauen upper station, reached by cable car, the hiking trail climbs gently across open meadows. Passing Hofad and Ebnet, it heads towards Steinen and Alp Chulmhalde. Along the way, views open up across the Urnersee to the mountains of eastern Uri. The route, just under four kilometres long, involves only around 125 metres of ascent in total; a little over two hours should be allowed for the outward and return journey.
Shortly before the turnaround point, the trail reaches its highest point at around 1,660 m. The rocky Hunds-Chopf then comes into view, its flanks dropping steeply away. Here the route turns back and follows the same trail across the open pastures. With hardly any woodland to obscure the view, the lake remains a constant presence on the return journey, before a short descent leads back to the Niederbauen upper station.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
