01/ Overview
The route
Mount Bürgenstock is more than a mountain – it’s a legend. Its cliff path, built between 1900 and 1905, is also legendary. Both the path and the spectacular Hammetschwand Elevator lead you up to Hammetschwand, the highest point of the city of Lucerne.
From the Bürgenstock, Zentrum bus stop, the five-kilometre loop initially leads out of the resort. A broad hiking trail climbs gently before soon entering the forest. Between the trees, views open up in places over Lake Lucerne far below.
In the middle section, the trail narrows and takes on the character of a mountain path. The ascent continues to the highest point of the loop at around 1,080 m. Shortly afterwards, the Chänzeli is reached. The rocky terrain forms the striking highlight of the hike before the trail begins to descend again.
The return route leads through forest and across open meadows. It passes Villa Honegg in the direction of Trogen, after which the loop gradually closes. Shortly before the finish, the trail passes the Bürgenstock Chapel and Taverne 1879. After just under an hour and a half, the hike ends once again near the Bürgenstock, Zentrum bus stop.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
