01/ Overview

The route

High above Lake Lucerne, the cliff walk combines scenic rocky sections with shady woodland, a geological educational trail and the Hammetschwand Lift.

From the Bürgenstock, Zentrum bus stop, it is only a few steps to the entrance to the cliff walk. The well-prepared gravel path begins by the Bürgenstock Chapel and soon enters the forest. Along the rocky flank, views repeatedly open up across Lake Lucerne and the surrounding peaks. Information boards with QR codes recount the geology and history of the Bürgenberg.

Along the way, the Hammetschwand Lift, Europe’s highest outdoor lift, provides assistance with the ascent. Higher up, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,100 m near Bürgenstock. The path returns along the ridge and through woodland on the eastern side of the Bürgenberg; rocky sections give this part a more mountainous character. Part of the return route retraces the same path before the first buildings of the resort appear. Passing the Bürgenstock Resort, the circuit returns to Bürgenstock after a little over an hour and a half, with the Zentrum bus stop close to the finish.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
