01/ Overview

The route

A continuous, gentle ascent leads across extensive flower meadows to the banks of the Sense. It is considered one of the last wild rivers in the Alpine region, and the WWF named it the most beautiful river in Europe. Past the Rohrmoos fen and amphibian spawning ground, the trail leads to Schwarzsee lake, inviting you to take a dip between wooded hills.

The hike begins in the centre of the village at the Plaffeien, Dorf bus stop. The waymarked hiking trail soon leaves the houses behind and initially descends gently. Open meadows and pastures dominate the scenery, interspersed with stretches of woodland. With a total ascent of around 350 metres, the gradient remains moderate; the trail winds peacefully through the cultivated pre-Alpine landscape towards Zollhaus.

Beyond Zollhaus, sparsely built-up stretches alternate with meadows and woodland. The route approaches Schwarzsee via Lichtena. Towards the end, it climbs once more and reaches its highest point at around 1'050 m shortly before the destination. After ten kilometres and just over two and a half hours, the hike ends in Schwarzsee. The lake, covering around half a square kilometre, lies close to the finish. The Schwarzsee, Gypsera bus stop is only a few steps away.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
