01/ Overview
The route
Four interpretive panels show how Alpine folding, the ice ages and water shaped the open, rolling landscape around Escholzmatt. A peaceful three-hour circuit from the railway station.
From Escholzmatt railway station, the well-signposted circular route initially leads out of the village. Along the way, four interpretive panels explain how Alpine folding, molasse and the ice ages shaped the area. Roches moutonnées, a meltwater channel and a planation surface can all be identified in the landscape.
Via Schwandacher, the route gradually descends to Lehn, the lowest part of the circuit. The Lehn chapel stands only a few steps from the trail. The route then climbs again via Feldmoos. It runs mostly along broad hiking trails, interspersed with longer sections that remain signposted but lie outside the marked hiking trail network.
In the final third, the trail crosses open, rolling countryside to the highest point at around 970 m. It then leads back via Alpach to the houses of Escholzmatt. Shortly before the railway station, the route passes through the village centre and directly by Olis Eck. After around three hours, the Geo Trail ends back at Escholzmatt railway station.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
