01/ Overview
The route
A perfect 18 km hike along the Gürbetaler Höhenweg Path close to the city of Berne, leading along the Längenberg and Gürbetal valley. An ideal hike for those who enjoy views of the distant Alps and have a cultural interest in farmhouses.
From the Kehrsatz bus stop, the trail leads out of the village and soon climbs through wooded slopes. Beyond Englisberg, open meadows alternate with stretches of forest and scattered settlements. The varied route covers around 18 kilometres and gains a total of approximately 720 metres in elevation.
Via Hofmatt and Fallenbach, the route continues in a steady succession of ascents and descents to Obertoffen. Shortly afterwards, it reaches its highest point at around 860 metres. Here, the trail’s elevated character is particularly noticeable before it gradually begins to descend again. A short distance off the route lies the Pfaffenloch, a cave in a sandstone cliff that is partially accessible.
Through forest and across open pastures, the final section leads towards Weid. The trail then descends increasingly steeply into the Gürbetal and reaches Mühlethurnen. The hike of just over five hours ends at Thurnen railway station, with direct access to public transport.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
