01/ Overview
The route
Towers, grottos and palaces, just like a faraway land in a fairytale. Yet we are not in the East, but in Schwarzsee in the Fribourg Pre-Alps. This walk will transport both young and old to another world.
The roughly four-kilometre winter hike begins at the Schwarzsee, Gypsera bus stop. Shortly after the start, the route reaches its highest point at around 1,050 metres. Schwarzsee, a lake covering around 0.5 km² in the Fribourg Pre-Alps, lies close to the starting point. The trail then begins a gentle descent between the houses of Schwarzsee.
The built-up area soon gives way to open meadows and pastures. With only a few short counter-climbs, the route gradually loses just over 80 metres in elevation, so most of the trail remains leisurely. Later, the forest draws closer and comes to dominate the surroundings.
After a little over three kilometres, the winter hike passes close to the Eispaläste car park and continues to the houses of Lichtena. The Schwarzsee, Lichtena bus stop is just a few steps from the route. After a little over an hour, the hike ends at the Eispaläste.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
