01/ Overview
The route
This simple circular trail begins at the famous Gurnigel mountain lodge. It explores the area along a well-groomed route, offering fantastic views of the Gantrisch Range peaks with the Nünenenflue, Gantrisch, Bürglen, and Ochse.
The winter hike begins at the Gurnigel Berghaus bus stop, on the open heights of the Gurnigel. The trail climbs across meadows towards Selibüel. After around one kilometre, it reaches its highest point at just under 1,660 m. Here, the Gurnigel forms a distinctive ridge on the northern edge of the Fribourg Alps.
The route then descends to Wasserscheide Pass. Along the way, open terrain alternates with a short section of forest, before the winter hiking trail continues along the edge of wet meadows. The lowest point of the circuit is reached shortly after Wasserscheide.
From there, a climb leads back to Gurnigelhöhe. The final metres once again cross open terrain to Gurnigel Berghaus. After around three kilometres and just over an hour, the circuit ends back at the Gurnigel Berghaus bus stop.

How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
