01/ Overview
The route
A children’s adventure trail follows the Wigger from Hergiswil to Willisau. Along the way, meadows, short stretches of woodland and the Breiten fire pit beckon before the route passes through the old town to the railway station.
The starting point in Hergiswil is at around 635 m and is also the highest point on the route. It is just under 400 m from the Hergiswil LU, Untere Schmiede bus stop to the start. The broad hiking trail leaves the village without any uphill sections and follows the Wigger downstream. Known as the Chrüterhäxli Lilli Gwonderwäg, this section is a children’s adventure trail with little discoveries along the wayside. The route descends gently between meadows and short stretches of woodland to Breiten.
The Breiten fire pit and playground are located directly beside the route. The trail, a little over five kilometres long, then continues across open countryside and through Eimatt, with the first houses of Willisau gradually drawing closer. At Zehntenplatz, the route passes Heiligblut and soon reaches Willisau’s old town, where shops and pavement cafés offer opportunities for a break. It then continues through the built-up area to Willisau railway station, the lowest point and destination of the roughly 80-minute hike.

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
