01/ Overview
The route
A short circuit across the open slopes of Hergiswil: planted herb benches tell of thyme, hyssop and rosemary, while views extend as far as the Napf region.
From the «Hergiswil LU, Dorf» bus stop, it is only a few steps to the tourist information office, where the Herb Bench Trail begins. Initially, the route follows the Enziwigger and soon leaves the houses of Hergiswil behind. It climbs gently across meadows and open slopes. Along the way, benches with herb plantings and information about the plants that give the trail its name appear at regular intervals.
The thyme, hyssop and St John’s wort benches provide highlights along the way; at the hyssop bench, the circuit can be shortened by returning to the village. Higher up, the view sweeps across Hergiswil towards the Napf region. Near Buechehübeli, the trail reaches its highest point at around 800 m before descending again. Marshmallow and rosemary can also be found along the way, while herb and berry products are sold at Märthüsli. After around an hour, the route returns to the village, passes Café Thalmann and ends back at the tourist information office at Steinacher.

Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
