Hiking Trail from Schaffhausen to Rheinau, Stage 4/10

Along Feuerthalen Rhine promenade and the Flurlingen filigree Rhine bridge to the Rhine Falls with Laufen and Wörth castles, Rhine bridge of the «Rheinfallbahn» from 1857. Along idyllic footpaths to Rheinau with Klosterinsel, Bergkirche, covered wooden bridge.

From the Schaffhausen, Bahnhof stop, the hike leads through the old town. It passes St. Johann Church, whose construction began around the year 1000, before descending to the Rhine. The highest point comes near the start, at around 410 m; after that, the profile remains gentle despite a few short climbs.

The hiking trail follows the riverbank downstream via Flurlingen, initially between houses and later through woodland. At the Rheinweg viewpoint, the Rhine Falls come into view: 150 metres wide, the river plunges 23 metres into the depths. A little later, the route passes through Nohl before leaving the Rhine behind.

The second half continues through extensive stretches of woodland and across open meadows, with gentle ascents and descents. Towards the end, the first houses herald the approach to Rheinau. After a total of 14 kilometres and just under four hours, the hike ends in the lower town, directly beside the bus stop of the same name.
