01/ Overview
The route
South of Rheinau kilometre-long forest path along slopes above the Rhine to Ellikon. Through woodlands beside the River Thur and cultivated landscape of Flaacherfeld to Flaach. Extensive panorama from Buchberg church. Through sunny vineyards to Eglisau.
From the Rheinau, Unterstadt bus stop, the yellow-marked hiking trail leads out of Rheinau into open countryside. Meadows and fields alternate with stretches of woodland, with Balm and Ellikon am Rhein in between. The observation hut is a worthwhile spot for a first break; later, the route passes close to the beaver-watching platform through wet terrain.
After around three hours, Stäubis offers an opportunity to stop for refreshments. The trail then reaches Rüdlingen and passes the Reformed church before climbing to Buchberg. Beyond the village, the route reaches the highest point of the hike at around 500 metres. The ascent remains moderate, but over a total distance of 20 kilometres the elevation gain adds up to around 360 metres.
Open terrain and woodland then alternate once more. Towards the end, Eglisau draws closer. The trail leads into the old town and past the protected Reformed town church. After just over five hours, the hike ends at Eglisau railway station.
