Hirzli-Rundweg

This tour leads from the most rewarding Glarner Unterland mountain; with stupendous panorama views over the Linthebene and the Zurich and Walensee lakes. On a clear day, views extend even as far as the Black Forest and environs.

The starting point of this seven-kilometre loop is the Morgenholz bus stop above Niederurnen. From there, an initially broad hiking trail climbs through open meadows. It soon gives way to a mountain trail marked in white, red and white. Climbing steeply between pastures and sections of woodland, it gains most of the route’s approximately 660 metres of elevation over a short distance.

After around three kilometres, the route reaches its highest point at approximately 1'630 m, immediately below the Hirzli. The 1'640 m summit rises on the ridge above the Niederurnertal and forms the highlight of the loop. The mountain trail then descends towards Mettmen. Lower down, the path broadens again, passes through the small settlements of Mettmen and Bodenberg, and completes the loop at Morgenholz. A good three hours should be allowed for the seven kilometres and the equal amount of ascent and descent.
