01/ Overview

The route

The route continues across wooded hilltops, through valleys, fields and villages that are worth seeing, such as Merishausen, Büttenhardt and Lohn, then past Herblingen Castle to the attractive old town of Schaffhausen.

The roughly seven-hour hike begins at the Siblinger Randenhaus, away from public transport links. The nearest stop, Siblingen, Dorf, is a good two kilometres away. Right at the start, the yellow-marked hiking trail reaches its highest point at 877 m. It then leads through the extensive forests of the Randen, interspersed with open meadows and pastures. Despite a total descent of 950 metres, several counter-ascents provide variety.

After around four hours, Lohn comes into view. Beyond the village, the route re-enters the forest and leads to the Cherzenstübli, an inviting spot for a short break. Later, the Wettewis accompanies the trail for around one kilometre. The rural surroundings gradually give way to the outskirts of Schaffhausen. The long descent ends in the town; Schaffhausen railway station is only a few steps from the finish.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
