La Berra par la Valsainte

A peaceful hike through the fields and forests of the Javro Valley, away from the throngs of tourists. While the walk to the peak of La Berra presents no technical challenges, it is rather steep. The charterhouse La Valsainte right after the start is an impressive sight.

The circular hike begins at the La Valsainte, Couvent bus stop and follows a waymarked hiking trail throughout. A good four and a half hours should be allowed for the 14 kilometres and around 800 metres of ascent. The trail climbs steadily between pastures and stretches of forest, reaching Les Allières after around four kilometres. The ascent then becomes steeper. The first five kilometres or so form the main climb of the hike. The route continues across open terrain to La Berra, the highest point of the hike at around 1,700 m. The summit is part of the Fribourg Pre-Alps.

The descent sweeps in a broad arc across alpine pastures to the Auta Chia mountain restaurant. Open terrain and forest then alternate as the hiking trail leads back towards La Valsainte. Near the end, the houses of Les Mossettes come into view. From there, it is around one kilometre back to the starting point at the La Valsainte, Couvent bus stop.
