01/ Overview

The route

Walk along Europe's highest winter hiking trail (3,100-3,120 m.a.s.l.): the route leads from the Hockenhorngrat around the Hockenhorn to a view point. On arriving, you are greeted by a fabulous view of 40 peaks of 4,000 meters including the Mischabel group and the Matterhorn.

This short winter hike begins at the Hockenhorngrat stop, just a few steps from the starting point. In rocky high-Alpine terrain, the route climbs gently, gaining a total of around 30 metres in elevation. The 3,293 m Hockenhorn lies around 150 m off the route; its summit stands on the cantonal border between Bern and Valais.

About halfway round, the circuit reaches its highest point at just over 3,100 m. It then leads back over the Hockenhorngrat to the starting point and the stop of the same name.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: SLF only publishes its snow maps from November 1. Until then we roughly estimate the snow depth at the lowest and the highest point of the route every day from the nearest SLF measuring stations. Check the situation on site.
