01/ Overview
The route
A fairytale like winter wonderland, combined with a thick layer of ice and steep rock faces. Winterhiking at the Oeschinensee impresses with all elements that winter offers.
The winter walk begins at Restaurant Bergstübli, right beside Oeschinen mountain station. At first, the route descends across open terrain, then continues between woodland and the houses of Oeschinensee to the nearby lake. Oeschinensee lies at 1'578 m and has formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Swiss Alps Jungfrau–Aletsch since 2007; it was created by prehistoric rockfalls.
After the lowest point near the lake, the circular route turns uphill again. The ascent remains moderate, passing alternately through woodland and open pastures. In the final third, the route reaches its highest point near Bire at around 1'690 m. It then leads gently back to the starting point. After four kilometres and just over an hour, the winter walk ends back at Oeschinen mountain station.
