01/ Overview

The route

Since 1971 there have been cross-country ski runs for all levels on the Lindenberg, around 850 metres above sea level. As it is usually above the sea of fog, the Horben ski run provides a panoramic view from the canton of Zug to the Rigi mountain and beyond to the Alps and their foothills.

The circular trail begins at Alpwirtschaft Horben on the Lindenberg plateau. There is no public transport stop in the immediate vicinity; it is around 1.5 km from Brunnwil, Weiler, to the starting point. Slightly off the trail stand Schloss Horben and the Chapel of St Wendelin. Built at the beginning of the 18th century as a summer residence for the monks of Muri Abbey, the castle is a cultural property of national significance.

From Horben, the trail initially crosses open meadows and pastures. Climbing gently, it reaches its highest point at around 860 m near Lindenberg after approximately two and a half kilometres. Open terrain and sections of forest then alternate; rather than long climbs, the circuit is characterised by gentle undulations.

In the middle section, the trail ventures deeper into the forest and passes directly by a barbecue area. Later, Hofbeizli Holzmatt farm café lies slightly off the route. Across the lower pastures, the loop finally climbs back up to the Horben plateau and ends after around 11 km at Alpwirtschaft Horben.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
