01/ Overview

The route

Get to know Switzerland from its authentic side: far from any main road, the Rickenbach cross-country skiing trail wends its way through the scenic Michelsamt region amid hills, open fields and rustic farms.

The starting point of the six-kilometre loop is Rickenbach LU. It is not directly served by public transport; the start is around 450 m from the Rickenbach LU, Dorf stop. The trail leaves the houses behind and crosses open, gently rising terrain towards Feldenmoos.

The ascent then continues across broad expanses of countryside. After just over two kilometres, the loop reaches its highest point near Bloseberg at around 820 m. From there, the trail descends towards Diegenstal. The return route once again crosses open meadows and pastures, with the houses of Rickenbach gradually drawing closer. A few short counter-ascents bring the total elevation gain to around 150 metres before the trail finally begins to lose height. After just under two hours, the loop closes in Rickenbach LU.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
