01/ Overview
The route
Cross-country skiers can escape the hustle and bustle above the fog, within viewing distance of the pulsing economic hub of Zug. In the snowy highland moors, you can imagine you are in Scandinavia and enjoy views stretching as far as the Rigi and the Alpine foothills.
From Zugerberg station, it is just under 200 metres to the start of the trail in Vordergeissboden. The twelve-kilometre circuit initially passes the houses of Schönfels before heading out into open terrain. Between meadows and wetlands, it briefly loses some elevation before climbing in a broad arc towards Früebüel.
Beyond Früebüel, the gentle ascent continues to Buschenchappeli and Pfaffenboden. Shortly afterwards, the trail reaches its highest point near the Grossmattstollen at around 1,030 m. Flat sections then alternate with slight counter-climbs, while the open upland plateau gives way in places to woodland and wet meadows.
In the final third, the circuit turns back via Hintergeissboden. Restaurant Hintergeissboden lies close to the trail before it once again passes through wooded terrain. After just over three hours, the circuit closes in Vordergeissboden; from there, it is just under 200 metres to Zugerberg station.

03/ Conditions
Current conditions
What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.
How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.
How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.
Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.
How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
