01/ Overview
The route
Switzerland's largest upland moor can be found in the high valley of Rothenthurm, a Nordic-looking landscape crossed by the varied Finnenloipe track. This long route amid a protected landscape offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the pleasures of nature.
The 20-kilometre cross-country ski trail begins near the Rothenthurm stop. It soon leaves the village and heads out into the broad moorland landscape. Between bogs and open meadows, the elevation profile remains gentle at first, with wide loops across the plain shaping the opening section.
In the second half, the circuit gradually gains height. After just under twelve kilometres, it reaches its highest point near Ratengütsch at around 930 m. The trail then descends again and reaches the Steinstoss-Stubli, located directly on the route. It continues across open terrain to the houses of Rossboden.
Towards the end, Rothenthurm comes back into view. In the village stands the medieval Letziturm defensive tower, also known as the Roter Turm because of the colour of its roof. The trail finally ends back near the Rothenthurm stop.
