01/ Overview
The route
On the sun terrace above Illgau, not far from the cantonal capital of Schwyz, lies a charming landscape of gently rolling hills. The special tranquillity of this area makes it very popular with snowshoe hikers and nature lovers.
The snowshoe tour starts from the Oberberg St. Karl stop at Illgau, St. Karl. The route climbs across open slopes and through sections of forest. After Sternenegg, it reaches the highest point of the circuit at around 1,520 m, near Hudlischijen. Up to this point, the long ascent defines the first part of the nine-kilometre route.
The route then continues towards Ibergeregg, keeping slightly away from the rocky Chli Schijen. Shortly before the pass, the snowshoe tour passes the Marienkapelle; soon afterwards, it reaches Ibergeregg, which connects Schwyz and Oberiberg. From there, the circuit turns back towards Illgau. Open terrain and forest alternate once more as the route gradually descends. After a good four and a half hours and around 560 metres of ascent and descent, the snowshoe tour ends back at St. Karl, directly at the Oberberg St. Karl stop.
