01/ Overview
The route
The steep ascent across meadows, fields and along the ski lift is richly rewarded: the Cabane de la Sarouche spoils you not only with culinary delights, but also with a magnificent view of the mountains and down to Château-d'Oex.
The starting point in Château-d'Oex, Gérignoz, is some distance from public transport; it is around 600 m from Les Granges-Gérignoz railway station to the start. The snowshoe route climbs steadily across open meadows and pastures, gaining around 700 metres in elevation.
After a little over two hours, the highest point near Rocher du Midi is reached at around 1,630 m. Shortly afterwards, Restaurant La Braye lies close to the route. The snowshoe circuit then turns back towards Gérignoz, losing its elevation over an extended descent.
Open terrain also characterises the return leg. Towards the end, the route levels out and, after around five and a half hours, finishes back at the starting point in Château-d'Oex, Gérignoz. From there, it is again around 600 m to Les Granges-Gérignoz railway station for onward travel by public transport.
