01/ Overview

The route

The "Grande Boucle" is an exceptional cross-country skiing loop for those who want to tour the Franches-Montagnes. The gentle downhill gradient runs for 42km, the same distance as a marathon. This route criss-crosses the region and its unspoiled landscapes.

The 46-kilometre cross-country ski trail through the open expanses of the Franches-Montagnes begins near the Les Breuleux, école stop. It initially climbs over gentle rises, passing Beau Séjour «chez Tante Eva» and Combe à la Biche. After around eight kilometres, the highest point is reached near Mont Soleil at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m.

The loop then sweeps in a broad arc across pastures and between scattered houses to Les Bois and Le Cerneux-au-Maire. Via Le Noirmont, the trail continues through gently rolling uplands, with long, gradual descents alternating with counter-climbs. Near Les Cerlatez, small settlements once again come into view.

Via La Theurre and Le Chaumont, the trail passes through the area around Étang de la Gruère. The dammed moorland lake lies in a hollow on the high plateau; the wider area is listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance. The great loop then leads back to Les Breuleux and ends near the Les Breuleux, école stop.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
