01/ Overview

The route

Cross-country skiing routes in a variety of landscapes, from forest to peat bog and pasture. Just like being in Lapland or the pastures of the Jura, with the added bonus of the magnificent views over the Pre-Alps.

The circular trail starts at Chalet Neuf in Monts-de-Riaz, away from public transport; the nearest stop, Maules, village, is around 2.4 kilometres away. Right at the start, the trail reaches its highest point at just under 1,000 metres. It then continues in gentle undulations across open meadows and pastures.

In the middle section, it briefly follows the Gérigno. A little further on, the Etang de Bugnons lies directly beside the route. The open landscape continues to define the scenery before the Etang des Gurles provides a second highlight. From there, the loop continues over the heights of Monts-de-Riaz. Across the entire circuit, the ascents and descents each total around 180 metres in elevation. After approximately 13 kilometres and a good three hours of cross-country skiing, the trail returns to Chalet Neuf.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Cross-country skiing is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
