01/ Overview

The route

The name already says it all: the Pizol panoramic path captivates with its impressive view in the middle of the UNESCO world heritage site Tectonic Arena Sardona.

The winter hike, around four kilometres long, begins at the Laufböden mountain station. The first few metres lead past the Laufbödenstübli. The route then climbs across open slopes and past the rocky Tagweidlichopf. Before long, the highest point is reached at around 2,270 m. Across the gentle undulations of the high plateau, the total ascent amounts to around 150 metres.

From the highest point, the winter hiking trail sweeps in a broad arc towards Wangsersee, a mountain lake in the canton of St. Gallen. The route runs directly along the shore, where open expanses and rocky hillocks dominate the scenery. The trail then descends gently and turns back towards Laufböden. Short uphill sections punctuate the return route without altering the open character of the landscape. After around four kilometres and one hour and 20 minutes, the circuit ends back at the Laufböden mountain station.

03/ Conditions

Current conditions

What to know before you set off. Closures and snow are re-checked every day.

  • How we check: Every night we match the route against the official closures and detours from the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO). Any reported closure that touches the route shows up here.

  • How we check: We look up a live public transport connection from your starting point to the stop closest to the trailhead. If it ends further away, the nearest stop may be a cable car or bus that isn't running right now.

  • Winter hiking is more fun in the snow! Check local conditions before heading out.

How we check: Snow depth estimated daily at the lowest and the highest point of the route. Estimates: check the situation on site.
